As I was checking out some bands on the internet I was reflecting on a time when I was starting to photograph bands. Remember now this was in the 80's, computers were the size of one big wall. There was no internet, no twitter, no Facebook, no instagram, no youtube, no cellphones but worst of all no cable. On some week ends I would stand outside the Sunset Tattoo Shop with my portfolio opened up handing out cards. That was a period in time when mostly musicians had tattoos. Other week ends I would walk with the local bands up and down Hollywood or Sunset Blvd. in front of the popular venues handing out flyers. One could not believe how many local bands showed up every week end promoting their bands. The streets were littered with so many flyers it looked like a parade came through.Another way to find bands was to look in what we called the local rag magazines.Bands placed adds in these papers and I called each band introducing myself. Every band I have ever met has had to go through the same process of promoting themselves. The bands not only tried ro get people to see them but they need guaranteed ticket sales or they would have to pay to play. Bands today have so many ways to reach out to people as I mentioned above. One such band in this issue " LOVERBOY" is a great example of a band that came up thru the ranks in the 80's. The other band in this issue The Tommy Mitchell band is one that is quickly on the rise reaching out to their fan base with everything technology has to offer. Technology might have change since the 80's but getting people to see the shows have not. Enjoy this issue and I will have more to follow.
